Softer Soft Scrub

My Homemade Laundry Detergent was featured in the news this past week!  Due to the popularity of that post, I thought I would share with you another of my homemade cleaning recipes. This recipe is my all natural, non toxic take on “Soft Scrub”.  When cleaning my house, I make a big batch of it and use it to clean my sinks, toilets, tub & shower.  It is so gentle on my hands and smells great.  The baking soda is a gentle abrasive for removing dirt and neutralizing odors.  The castile soap & grapefruit essential oil are cleansing, disinfectant & antibacterial.  Use it to combat mold & mildew, soap scum and hard water stains.

Why make your own cleaning products? There are three big reasons for me.  #1 Safety. Commercial cleaners are filled with pretty toxic ingredients.  Bleach, Dyes, Fragrances. These are things that you don’t want to inhale or get on your skin, which is quite difficult when cleaning.  Before I got into making my own natural cleaners, I would clean my tub and then be sort of afraid to soak in it.  Not a good sign, right? Now that I have little kids running around, I feel much safer having eliminated all those harsh chemicals from under my sink. #2 Cost.  Making your own homemade cleaners requires only a few simple and inexpensive ingredients like baking soda, borax & vinegar.  You can purchase most of them in bulk and save yourself a ton of money!  #3 The Environment.  Your cleaners will eventually end up in the water.  Why fill it with chemicals when you don’t have to?

Ingredients:
2 cups Baking Soda
½ cup Liquid Castile Soap (I use Dr. Bronner’s or homemade)
4 tbsp Glycerine
20 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil (you can sub any citrus essential oil you have on hand)

Directions:

Work scrub into surfaces with a damp cloth or scrub brush.

Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and wash with warm water.

Store any remaining scrub in a well-sealed glass jar.

Quick question: I know that citrus is what cuts through grease and scum etc. Is there an extract that you know of that will do the same thing without being a citrus? I would LOVE to use this recipe but i have an allergy to citrus fruits. If you can help that’d be great! If you don’t know the answer no worries, I’ll do some more research :-).

      Hi Sara,
Yes, citrus oils are great for grease. But so is Borax!! It removes dirt, grime and soap scum as well. You can use this recipe without any essential oil and it will still be great. If you want to substitute I would use Eucalyptus, which is also great for grease, dirt, grime and soap scum. Or you can just add an oil that you love to make your cleaning experience a pleasant one 🙂 Enjoy!
